Concepts Thursday, Feb 21 2008

To find a concept for the site I looked at two ideas that interested me, the park as a centerpiece of the community and the sidewalks that were cracked and displaced.  I created several concept models, paintings and altered photographs to help support these ideas.

In my first model I explored the idea of how the community was affected by Katrina.  The chipboard symbolizes the homes that were damaged and being rebuilt.

The second model I looked at the idea of the park being a centerpiece of the community and how it is linked with other places and programs in New Orleans.

The Third Model also looks at the idea of the park being the centerpiece and how the surrounding community is in pieces since Katrina.  The plywood block in the middle represents the park and the broken glass symbolize the community.  I express three ideas I will use in designing the new park, rebuild the pieces, strengthen the community, and remember the lost.

In my paintings and altered photographs I studied the cracked and displaced sidewalks.  I used the colors  green because of its relationship to nature, growth and fertility and blue because of its relationship to water, depth, and stability.

Inspiration in Gentilly Friday, Feb 8 2008

In the car ride to New Orleans I thought finding inspiration would be a tough task due to the cold and rainy weather conditions.  Stepping out of the car at Donnelly Park made it seem like a reality.  My mind quickly changed as I found several interesting moments walking through the park.  Marbles lying underneath a Live Oak could be evidence that children still use the park on a regular basis.  Cracked sidewalks were visible signs of the pain the community has felt from Katrina.  Watching the homes being rebuilt around the park and listening to the resident’s stories was proof that this is something special to them.  Also, finding beer cans in the field could possibly mean LSU tailgaters have used the park, just kidding.  To me these moments symbolize a combination of hope and endurance that I plan to use as inspiration in my design process.  I am very excited to be working on this project and look forward to designing a park that remembers the past experiences and creates new ones.
